Which is Better: Reading Online or Offline?

When making reading a habit, many new readers often face the question: Should I start by reading online, or should I buy a physical book first? Let’s dig into it. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, but ultimately, it’s up to the reader’s choice and personal preferences.

Offline Reading (Physical Books)

When I first started reading, I began with physical books. Most people who start reading tend to begin with physical books as well.

PROS:

  1. Focus: Reading a physical book helps you avoid screen distractions and allows for deeper focus.
  2. Comfort: Many readers find physical books more comfortable and convenient. Holding a book can be relaxing and can reduce fatigue.
  3. Experience: Reading a physical book is a unique experience. Every book lover understands the joy of feeling and smelling the pages. The satisfaction of turning pages and completing a book is a surreal experience.

However, physical books do have their downsides, such as storage issues, cost, and limited accessibility. Despite these, I believe starting with hard copy or physical books is a great choice.

Online Reading / Kindle

Nowadays, the younger generation often prefers reading online or through e-books. Online books are great for those who want access to a wide variety of books.

PROS:

  1. Accessibility: You can access various kinds of books anywhere with an internet connection, which is ideal for people who travel or don’t have easy access to physical bookstores.
  2. Convenience: Online platforms offer features like zoom, adjustable fonts, and note-taking abilities, making reading easier and more interactive.

However, too much screen time can lead to fatigue and eye strain. Additionally, online reading can be distracting due to notifications.

Conclusion

Online reading might be better for you if you want to save money, value convenience, and collect a large number of books. On the other hand, offline books are best if you prefer a distraction-free, comfortable, and wholesome experience. Personally, I prefer offline or physical books.
